Why Nigerian universities rank low globally – VC

The Vice-Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Prof. Bamitale Omole, has adduced incessant closures as the reason why Nigerian universities rank low globally among their counterparts in the world.

Speaking at a news conference held in OAU to herald the 50th anniversary celebration of the institution on Monday, Omole said industrial and student strikes had taken a toll on the ranking of Nigerian universities.

Explaining that the institution had evolved a means of settling disputes during roundtable talks and negotiations, Omole said Nigerian universities would fail to be among the best 10 in Africa if incessant closures continued.

He said, “We know that unions are vital to university administration system. OAU is overcoming its problems in the area of closures. OAU will be among the best 10 universities in Africa in the next five years.

“How can Nigerian universities be among the best 10 in Africa when our universities are locked up for two, three months? Web-O-Metric ranking takes cognisance of smooth running of the system.

“There are Web-O-Metric ranking generated in Spain, Turkey, India, China and the UK. OAU is the 10th-ranked university in Africa in the area of research.”

Omole said landmark achievements recorded by previous administrations in the university would be sustained even as he promised to complete eight of the 13 abandoned projects in the university.
