The Director General of National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA), Mohammad Sani-Sidi, yesterday faulted reports of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, IDMC.
The DG, while reeling out the figures in Abuja during a humanitarian meeting with the United States Aid, USAID, said 981,416 people have been displaced across the country as a result of insurgency and natural disasters.
While stating that the International Organisation for Migration, IOM, had already verified the data provided by the agency on the number of IDPs across the country, he said “those figures being brandished by international NGOs and the media are not correct.”
Sani-Sidi alleged that the NGOs came up with the IDPs figures to attract increased funding from international donors, as IOM, an international NGO, came up with figures that are not quite different from that of NEMA.
The IDMC in its global estimates of IDPs put the number of displaced people in Nigeria at three million. -NationalMirror
