LEADING telecommunications company in Nigeria, MTN, has presented three lucky contestants that emerged winners of its recently held MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2012 and Awards with cheques totaling N7million.
Twenty-five- year old Isoken Ogiemwonyi, Co-Founder of L’Espace, a retail store based in Lagos, who bagged the award of the MTN/British Council Young Creative Entrepreneur for 2012 received a cheque of N2million from MTN. Ms. Roots Odutola, a budding model won the MTN Young Model of the Year 2012 award and also got a cheque of N1million. The star prize of N4million for the MTN/British Council Young Designer of the Year 2012 was won by 20-year-old Joshua Udiminue of Josh Samuels, a fast growing male clothing brand in Lagos but with a growing popularity among Covenant University undergraduates and postgraduate students where he’s currently pursuing a Masters degree in Architecture.
The four-day event, which was held at the Expo Hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos from October 24-27 2012, drew participants and visitors from within and outside the country.
MTN Nigeria, the headline sponsor of the MTN LFDW, alongside the event’s main promoter, Style House Files and co-sponsor, the British Council Nigeria have expressed satisfaction that the platform will indeed provide Nigeria’s fashion industry the much needed boost to develop the industry.
Just like the maiden edition, which held last year, the MTN LFDW 2012 featured runway shows featuring new season collections from the best talents in the fashion industry. It also featured exhibition of fashion products and accessories, textiles, furniture designs, photography, arts installations and architecture and fashion workshops to facilitate knowledge transfer, information exchange and networking opportunities across board.
General Manager, Consumer Marketing, MTN Nigeria, Mr. Kola Oyeyemi, who represented the Chief Marketing Officer, MTN Nigeria, Mr. Larry Annetts, at the awards presentation and grand finale of the event, said MTN was pleased to associate with the event. He added that, as a growing industry, there is a need to develop young talents who are vital in the development and sustenance of any economy.
Speaking at the ceremony, Creative Director, Style House Files, Mrs. Omoyemi Akerele, said the event has already built the reputation as the biggest fashion show hosted in Nigeria on the grounds of size of the production, the calibre of designers, exhibitors, industry stakeholders, stylists, makeup artists, hair specialists, local and international fashion press, photographers, V.I.P. guest list and the number of blue chip companies which provided corporate sponsorship and support.
Some of the A-list designers that participated in the runway shows included Ituen Basi, Mango, Mai Atafo, Tiffany Amber, Jewel By Lisa, Eki Orleans, and Lanre Da Silva Ajayi. Others are Nkwo, Xclamations!, Sunny Rose, Bridget Awosika, Alter Ego, Grey, and Kinabuti.
Designers like Kiki Kamanu, Jewel By Lisa, Anita Quansah, Kiki Kamanu, Emmy Collins, Odio Mimonet, and Obsidian also showcased their latest Spring/Summer 2012 collections at the show.
As part of the grooming and capacity building initiative for the talents discovered on the show, 10 of the young designers that participated in last year’s award, including the winner, Vintage Colette also showcased their collections in the MTN LFDW show.
