Ministerial Screening: Senate postpones Amaechi’s hearing

gov-amaechi-rivers-stateThe Senate in Nigeria has again postponed the screening of former Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi and other candidates that have been tapped to join President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet as ministers.
The Senate announced it was postponing the screening session via a post on its Twitter handle, Thursday morning.
“Ladies and gentlemen. There will be no #MinisterialScreening today. We will continue on Tuesday. We will tweet CVs of new nominees,” the Senate said.
Mr. Amaechi’s nomination for the cabinet has drawn the highest controversy so far.
His confirmation hearing was deferred from the previous day after the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions failed to submit its report on the petition against the former governor on Wednesday.
The Chairman of the Committee, Sam Anyanwu, said the committee could not meet on Tuesday following the late adjournment of plenary.
Mr. Amaechi’s nomination is opposed by a certain “Integrity Group”, which petitioned the Senate alleging that he had not answered questions on alleged financial misappropriation during his tenure as governor of Rivers state.
The legislators have so far interviewed and confirmed 18 out of 36 nominees, now waiting to be sworn in.
